Step one

Which gearbox does your Porsche have?

The right repair depends on the gearbox type, symptoms and test findings. A PDK dual clutch, a Tiptronic torque converter automatic, a manual and the Taycan electric drive transmission fail in different ways and are repaired in different ways. We confirm the exact unit before parts are ordered. You can start an enquiry with your model and symptoms.

PDK dual clutch

Porsche Doppelkupplung

Two clutches serve separate gear sets, allowing the next anticipated gear to be preselected. PDK first appeared in a Porsche road car in 2008 on the 911 type 997. Many 992 Carrera versions use eight-speed PDK, while the 992 GT3 uses seven-speed PDK. Confirm the exact version before selecting parts or procedures.

Tiptronic automatic

Torque converter automatic

Many combustion-engine Cayenne automatic versions use Tiptronic S, with six- or eight-speed units depending on generation. Earlier manual versions require a different assessment. Older 911 and Boxster models offered Tiptronic as the automatic option before PDK arrived.

Manual gearbox

Clutch pedal and gear lever

Manual gearboxes are found on many 911, 718 and classic models. Faults are usually mechanical, such as clutch wear, synchro wear, bearings or the release system, rather than software.

Electric drive

Taycan two speed rear transmission

The Taycan has a two-speed rear transmission that uses shifting clutches. All-wheel-drive versions also have a front drive unit with a single-speed transmission. Electric Macan uses a different single-speed drive arrangement. Neither should receive petrol-model PDK service or reset instructions. Contact us to confirm the available assessment and referral route before booking electric drive-unit work.

  • Taycan
  • Quoted by chassis number

Porsche explains the Taycan transmission and shifting clutches and the 992 GT3 seven-speed PDK. Equipment and procedures must match the actual vehicle.

How PDK works

PDK and Tiptronic need different checks

One clutch drives the odd numbered gears and the other drives the even numbered gears, each on its own shaft. While you drive in one gear, the gearbox has already selected the next one, so one clutch closes as the other opens. That is why PDK shifts are so fast, and why clutch condition, hydraulic pressure and the control unit all matter when something goes wrong.

Tiptronic uses a torque converter, planetary gear sets and internal friction elements under hydraulic control. Diagnosis can involve fluid level, valve-body operation, converter lock-up, internal clutches and electrical signals. PDK clutch measurements must not be applied to a different transmission.

Symptoms

What you feel and where we look first

Each symptom points to a short list of causes. The list below is where testing starts, not a diagnosis. Several of these can come from the engine, a sensor or low battery voltage rather than the gearbox itself.

Shift

Harsh or delayed shifts

Adaptation values, fluid level and condition, software level, then hydraulic control and the mechatronic unit.

Pull away

Judder when moving off

On PDK, clutch adaptation and clutch condition values. On Tiptronic, converter behaviour and fluid condition. Engine mounts are also checked.

Slip

Revs rise without speed

Fluid level first, then clutch or internal wear. Driving on with slipping usually turns a smaller repair into a larger one.

Noise

Whine, rumble or clunk

Bearings, differential, driveshafts and mounts. A road test, when safe, helps distinguish gearbox noise from wheel bearings, tyres and other drivetrain components.

Leak

Fluid under the car

Seals, pan, cooler lines and housings. The fluid type is identified, because engine oil leaks often run back onto the gearbox.

Warning

Gearbox message or emergency mode

Fault memory is read across all control units, not only the gearbox, before any part is suggested. Voltage faults are ruled out early.

Safety

If the gearbox goes into emergency mode

  1. Stop safelyPull over where it is safe and switch on the hazard lights.
  2. Do not tow startPorsche owner information says a PDK car cannot be tow started or push started.
  3. Use a flatbedA PDK car in emergency mode should be carried on a truck or flatbed, not towed on its wheels.
Diagnostic route

Six checks before any gearbox part is quoted

Gearbox faults are expensive to guess. An initial safety check determines whether a road test is appropriate. The sequence then follows the complaint and applicable workshop procedure. Findings should distinguish a confirmed defect from a possibility needing further tests.

01

Complaint and safety check

Record when the fault occurs, inspect for unsafe leaks or damage and read the warning. Road-test only after preliminary checks show it is safe and useful.

02

Fault memory, all units

Gearbox, engine, chassis and network units are read and saved before anything is cleared.

03

Voltage and wiring

Battery, charging and connector checks, because low voltage can cause gearbox messages on its own.

04

Adaptation and live data

Shift times, clutch adaptation and wear related values on PDK, and pressure and slip values where the tester supports them.

05

Fluid level and condition

Level checked to the correct procedure for the gearbox, and the fluid looked at for burning, debris or contamination.

06

Leaks, mounts and sensors

Seals, cooler lines, mounts and speed or position sensors, before the verdict on the gearbox itself.

What you receive after diagnosis

  • Fault codes found, saved before clearing
  • The readings that point to the fault
  • The gearbox type and identification confirmed

Vehicle-specific maintenance

Match the fluid circuit and service schedule

There is no single PDK interval for every Porsche. Clutch fluid, gear oil and final-drive oil can be different maintenance items. The model year, transmission and market schedule decide which fluid, quantity, filter and procedure apply.

Published example Maintenance item Listed interval
Specified PDK 992 models, North American sheet PDK clutch fluid 90,000 km or 6 years
Same 911 sheet, applicable gearbox PDK gear oil or applicable manual gearbox oil 180,000 km or 12 years
Macan / S / GTS / Turbo, North American 2015-on checklist PDK oil and filter 60,000 km or 4 years

These are scoped examples, not a UAE schedule for every car. Use whichever time or distance limit comes first in the applicable schedule. Panamera, Tiptronic, older cars and special variants need their own maintenance record. Discuss track use, towing and other demanding operation when confirming the applicable maintenance plan.

Sources are Porsche Cars North America’s February 2023 inspection sheet for specified 911 models from model year 2022 and the May 2016 Macan maintenance checklist for 2015-on models. The 911 sheet covers Carrera / S, Turbo / S, Sport Classic and Dakar, with different tasks according to the fitted transmission. It is not a GT3 schedule. These North American examples do not replace the current schedule for your VIN and market.

Identify the circuit and approved fluid before draining. Set the level under the temperature and operating conditions required for that gearbox. Do not assume a powered flush, additive or adaptation reset is part of every service. Fluid cannot repair worn friction elements or damaged gears. Engine oil has a separate scope on our oil change page.

Repair choices

Six repair routes, from smallest to largest

Choose the route supported by the findings. This is not a sequence of treatments to try. A fluid service, update or reset should not delay a proven mechanical repair.

1

Software update

Where a newer gearbox software version addresses a known shift quality issue. Version recorded before and after.

3

Sensor or wiring repair

A failed speed or position sensor, connector corrosion or a wiring fault proven by measurement.

5

Clutch or internal repair

Clutch packs, bearings or seals, where the unit can be repaired rather than replaced. Scope confirmed after removal.

2

Adaptation and fluid

Service a due fluid circuit using its specified method. Reset or relearn only when a relevant procedure requires it, after recording the initial data and excluding underlying faults.

4

Mechatronic or valve body

Repair or replacement of the hydraulic control unit when tests point to it, followed by the coding, settings or adaptation required for that unit.

6

Rebuild or exchange unit

A full rebuild, or an exchange gearbox when internal damage is wide or a rebuild is not economical.

Matching finding to route

When each repair is the right one

What diagnosis finds Usual route What follows
Known shift quality issue, no hardware fault Software Road test and adaptation check
Abnormal adaptation readings or a due fluid service Investigate or service as indicated Find why readings are abnormal. Run learning routines only when the applicable procedure requires them
Signal fault from one sensor or connector Sensor or wiring Fault memory cleared and rechecked
Pressure or control faults inside the hydraulic unit Mechatronic or valve body Required coding or guided settings, then verification
Clutch wear or slip confirmed by values and road test Clutch or internal repair Guided settings only as required by the repair procedure
Metal debris, wide internal damage or repeat failure Rebuild or exchange Specified fluid fill, required setup and safe verification
Programming and setup

Use the procedure the repair actually requires

Software programming

An applicable manufacturer update may address a defined complaint. Confirm the vehicle and current software, relevant procedure and reliable power supply. A newer version is not proof that software caused the fault.

Coding and basic settings

A replacement control unit may need vehicle-specific configuration. Basic settings are guided operations with prerequisites. Neither is automatically required after every fluid change.

Adaptation and verification

Preserve starting readings. Reset or relearn only when the procedure calls for it. Complete the specified stationary or driving routine safely, then reassess the original symptom and any returning faults.

Abnormal learned values can point to wear, pressure loss or another underlying problem. A temporary change after a reset does not prove repair. The final report should identify the work performed and any condition that could not be reproduced.

Written terms before approval

Check the warranty for the selected repair

Warranty depends on the selected parts, supplier and work. Request the actual terms with the quotation before approving repairs. A used unit, a remanufactured exchange gearbox and a new genuine unit are different purchases.

Parts and supplier

Record the unit or part number, condition, supplier, duration and any mileage limit. Check whether a core must be returned and whether a damaged core changes the price.

Labour and exclusions

Confirm whether fitting workmanship, repeat removal/refitting, fluids and diagnostic charges are covered. Read the actual exclusions rather than assuming every later fault is covered.

If symptoms return

Contact the workshop with the invoice, warning and circumstances. Agree an assessment before further work. Follow any stop instruction and discuss recovery if the car is unsafe to drive.

Easy first contact

Tell us the model and the symptom

Call or WhatsApp with your Porsche model, what changed and your preferred visit time. You do not need to identify the gearbox or failed part. Year, mileage, VIN, service records and recent work are helpful optional follow-up details. Take warning photos only when safely parked.

We will discuss the initial diagnostic scope, fee and availability. Further testing or dismantling needs its own approval. Parts availability and the repair findings determine the handover estimate.

Questions

Porsche transmission questions

How do I know if my Porsche gearbox needs repair?

Harsh or delayed shifts, judder when pulling away, slipping, new noises, fluid leaks or a gearbox warning are the usual signs. None of them prove a gearbox repair is needed on their own, which is why fault memory, adaptation data and fluid are checked first.

Is my Porsche a PDK or a Tiptronic?

Many petrol 911, Boxster, Cayman, Macan and Panamera automatic versions use PDK, but generation and trim matter. Many combustion-engine Cayenne automatics use Tiptronic S. Older sports-car automatics may use Tiptronic. Electric Macan and Taycan have different drive transmissions. We identify the actual unit before ordering parts.

How much does Porsche transmission repair cost in Dubai?

Planning estimates start at AED 350 to 800 for initial assessment, AED 1,500 to 3,500 for a specified PDK fluid service and AED 5,000 to 14,500 for defined mechatronic or valve-body work. They include assumed labour and VAT for the listed scope and are not fixed offers. Diagnosis and additional repairs are separate unless expressly included.

Can a software update fix my gearbox?

Sometimes. Where a newer software version addresses a known shift quality issue, an update is the smallest fix. It cannot repair worn clutches, a failed sensor or internal damage, so it is only recommended when the readings support it.

How often should PDK fluid be changed?

Use the schedule for the model year, gearbox, market and fluid circuit. Published Australian examples list 992 clutch fluid at 90,000 km or 6 years and petrol Macan clutch fluid and filter at 60,000 km or 4 years. These are not universal UAE intervals. The vehicle documentation determines the actual due work.

Will a fluid change fix harsh shifting?

Only if the findings support a fluid-related cause or due maintenance. Fresh fluid cannot fix damaged parts or every control fault. Use the specified fluid and level procedure, and do not reset adaptations automatically.

What is a mechatronic unit?

It is the combined electronic and hydraulic control unit that operates the clutches and gear selection. Faults inside it can cause harsh shifts, warnings or limited driving. It is only replaced or repaired after tests point to it.

Should I rebuild or replace my gearbox?

A rebuild suits damage that is limited and repairable with available parts. An exchange unit suits wide internal damage, repeat failures or cases where a rebuild costs nearly as much. We explain both options with prices once the gearbox has been inspected.

Why does my gearbox need adaptation after repair?

Some repairs require guided learning or basic settings, depending on the fitted unit and replaced components. A routine fluid change does not establish a universal requirement. Preserve initial data and follow the applicable procedure.

Can I keep driving with a gearbox warning?

If the car enters emergency mode or the gearbox slips, stop safely and call. Driving on with a slipping gearbox often turns a smaller repair into a larger one. A PDK car in emergency mode should be moved on a flatbed.

Do you repair manual Porsche gearboxes?

Manual gearbox faults such as clutch wear, synchros, bearings and the release system are assessed and quoted after inspection. Classic gearbox rebuilds depend on parts availability, which we confirm before quoting.

Do you work on the Taycan transmission?

Contact us to confirm the assessment or referral available for your model before booking drive-unit work. Taycan rear transmissions use two speeds and shifting clutches. All-wheel-drive versions also have a front drive unit. Electric-drive work requires appropriate equipment, training and procedures, and petrol PDK instructions do not apply.

Can a weak battery cause gearbox faults?

Yes. Low voltage can make control units log faults and limit functions. Battery and charging checks are part of the early diagnostic steps for this reason, before any gearbox part is considered.

Do you offer discounts on gearbox work?

We do not advertise blanket percentage discounts. If an offer applies to your job, its terms are written on your quote so you can see exactly what it covers.

How long does a gearbox repair take?

Software, adaptation and fluid work is often short. Mechatronic, clutch, rebuild and exchange work takes longer and depends on parts. We give a time estimate with the quote for each stage.
